Programme Purpose

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill, and competence to work independently and under supervision in a supportive role within the Health Services. There are 28 optional component programme modules available in this programme, in addition to the two compulsory modules. Upon successful completion of a minimum of 8 programme modules, including the two compulsory modules, the learner will achieve the required 120 credits for this level 5 QQI major award. This Programme would be managed in line with the NFQ Grid of Level Indicators for ‘Competency - Learning to Learn’, which requires learners at levels 5 and 6 to take responsibility for their own learning within a closely managed environment, which would be provided by the NCU through the Distance Learning supports in the form of an online library of resources, hard copy study materials and handouts etc. It is for this reason that the Distance Learning option has been adopted as one of the Delivery Modes for this Programme as indicated below. Transfer, Progression and Employment Options: Upon successful completion of this programme, the learner will have many transfer, progression and employment options available to him/her. The learner may transfer to a programme leading to certification in one of the other level 5 QQI Major awards in healthcare with the NCU, which includes 5M4339 Healthcare Support and 5M4468 Community Health Services. Learner will have progression options to progress to Level 6 programmes which may include 6M4978 Advanced Certificate in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills (Level 6) with the Dún Laoghaire College of Further Education in Dublin and others or the Higher Certificate in Arts in Applied Social Studies in Social Care (Level 6) with the Athlone Institute of Technology and others. In addition the Institutes of Technology and other Colleges around the country do offer opportunities for further studies. Learners may check with the individual Admissions Offices of any institution they are interested in attending or visit www.cao.ie or www.qqi.ie. In case learners are exploring employment opportunities, the award holders of this award are qualified to work as professional carers in social, health and community care environments, both in the private and the governmental sectors. Further extensive details of transfer and progression options for learners have been included at Para 4 of Part 1 of the Application Form for this major programme.

Duration Description

This Major programme is being offered to the learner on a part time basis and designed to be sufficiently flexible to meet the needs of different learners with varying work/life situations. Overall, the programme is based on a duration of 1200 hours (150 hours per component module for the required 8 modules, i.e. 50 hours of directed learning and 100 hours of self-directed learning for each of the 8 component modules). The Course would be completed over 48 weeks, to include both directed and self-directed learning. However, for suitably qualified learners, a fast-track option for completion of this Programme in a minimum of 35 weeks would also be offered to selected candidates. The fast-track option would be based on the approval of a screening committee, which would assess each candidate’s prior learning, literacy and numeracy skills and the individual’s self-learning capabilities.
