Programme Purpose

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Science offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary education grounded in six key knowledge pillars: Social Policy, Sociology, Psychology, Criminology, Research, and Professional Skills and Social Innovation. This unique blend empowers learners to understand society from multiple perspectives—psychological, sociological, political, and criminological—while developing the research skills essential for real-world impact. Its key strength is in its variety. Some learners come to this programme with a clear idea of what their career path will be, but the majority have not made a decision and benefit from the variety of interrelated disciplines in the programme which provides a choice of routes that are not tied to a narrow path. What sets this degree apart is its integrated approach to contemporary social issues. Learners will explore how policy decisions shape communities (Social Policy and Sociology modules), how human behaviour influences societal structures (Sociology and Psychology modules), and how justice systems operate within broader social contexts (Criminology, Psychology and Social Policy modules). Criminology modules also allow learners to examine crime and justice critically; through Psychology, motivations behind individual and group behaviour may be examined. Research modules tie the programme together, teaching learners to gather, analyse, and present evidence effectively. This programme is ideal for individuals who are curious, analytical and passionate about making a difference. The degree prepares learners for a wide variety of careers in service, community development, education, research and equips them with the knowledge, adaptability, and critical thinking to make a contribution in a complex, changing world.
