Title

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

Programme Purpose

The overall goal of the MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is to provide graduates with essential research and development skills in AI. Learners will be familiarised with the technical landscape of AI, such as, classical, advanced, and state-of-the-art AI methods including their theoretical foundations and mathematical underpinnings. MSc in AI is a balanced programme with modules covering fundamental (Foundations of AI, Programming for AI, Data Analytics for AI, and Engineering and Evaluating AI systems, Intelligent Agents and Process Automation) and specialised AI topics (Machine Learning, AI Driven Decision Making), as well as topics related to operationalisation and application of AI in real-world problems (Data Governance and Ethics, Emerging AI Technologies and Sustainability). The programme also includes a final supervised project that can be carried out as an applied project or as an industry-based project. The latter provides an opportunity for learners to collaborate in a real-world industry-based project as a trainee, which is one of the distinctive features of this programme. Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to perform independent research that puts them into a position to make informed and critical decisions regarding the complete development life cycle of AI solutions, i.e., requirements elicitation and analysis, implementation, decision making, evaluation, and documentation. This emphasis provides learners with a broader view of their role in the development process and the impacts that each of these development phases have on one another. Learners will be able to demonstrate expert knowledge in implementing and evaluating existing AI algorithms and develop practical skills to solve real world AI problems. Learners will also be able to critically assess and evaluate ethical, sustainable, and responsible issues associated with the development and deployment of AI systems and synthesise and communicate technical AI solutions to the various stakeholders. The supervised applied project or industry-based project will enable learners to become better conscious and prepared to respond and adapt to new demands, although each learner will investigate a specific AI problem or play a specific role in the development life cycle of an AI solution. This programme is a 1-year full-time or a 2-year part-time Master of Science degree aimed at graduates of Level 8 (or equivalent) in numerous disciplines. The programme leads to a NFQ Level 9 award of Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSc in AI) awarded by QQI. Graduates of the programme take up roles as AI engineer, junior AI architect, junior AI ethicist, AI consultant, AI specialist, data scientist, machine learning (ML) engineer, ML developers, ML specialist among others.
