Healthcare Support

Programme Purpose

The certificate in Healthcare Support offers a comprehensive preparation for a career in the healthcare industry in a variety of settings eg nursing homes, community care, day care centres, respite centres, in a home setting or a hospital. It will qualify learners to work both independently and under supervision. The programme leads to the FETAC Level 5 award 5M4339 Healthcare Support. Learners will complete a total of 8 modules 5 of which are compulsory and three are to be chosen from a range of elective modules. The programme is available on a full time and part time basis with each module containing a minimum of 50 direct training hours and 100 self directed hours. On completion of the award learners will have the option of progressing to other appropriate programmes leading to awards as the next or higher level of the National Framework of Qualifications, or to specialize in one particular area of interest eg gerontological care. Learners who successfully complete this award may also progress to a range of alternative awards. Also subject to certain specific requirements this course may be used as an entry point to CAO and UCAS systems for entry to university. At the end of the course, learners have learned to interact efficiently in groups as well as developing autonomy in learning and taking responsibility for their work as follows: • Develop a range of personal and interpersonal qualities necessary for working in a childcare environment • Acquire specialist knowledge, skills and competence for the role of a childcare assistant • Creating and maintaining appropriate relationships with the client, their family and other professionals involved in childcare setting • Reflect on personal abilities and aptitudes to work as a childcare assistant • Demonstrate good practice in working as a childcare assistant • Apply and promote the principles and procedures of health and safety to oneself, others and the workplace • Enhance personal development and communication skills

Duration Description

This is a full and or part time programme delivered by direct learning = 400 Hours, 50 hours per module, Self-directed learning is 100 Hours per module over the course = 800 Hours, Work Experience 100 Hours. Continuous assessment is carried out throughout the course at the end of each module. 8 modules will be completed to achieve major award. If learner wants to include Occupational First Aid, then 9 modules will need to be completed.
