Programme Purpose
This full-time FETAC General Studies Level 5 programme will enable learners to build the knowledge, skills and competence required for participation in higher education, specifically higher education in Science & Health, including acquiring a broad range of knowledge in this area, and key skills for academic research and enquiry. Learners on this FETAC Level 5 General Studies Programme will complete 8 Modules - : 7 Compulsory and 1 Optional (from the list outlined at Number 6). Learners will receive a FETAC Level 5 Major Award in General Studies on successful completion of 8 Modules. A total credit value of 120 is required for this certification. For any one of the 9 Modules listed - Learners will receive a Minor award from FETAC for each module that they successfully complete. Throughout this course the learner will be educated through a stimulating, broad range of health and science studies areas. Learners will learn to interact efficiently in groups as well as developing autonomy in learning and taking responsibility for their work and the work of others. Learners on this course will be provided with a basic understanding of Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Statistics, Personal Development and Technology. Learners will gain an understanding of Science & Health and related areas in which to pursue careers in this field. Learners will: •Demonstrate knowledge of a specific area of interest to personal progression aspirations. •Explain key concepts and underpinning theoretical frameworks for areas of personal interest. •Demonstrate a broad range of research and communications skills and tools. •Utilise a range of academic research, investigate and evaluative skills. •Apply contemporary academic investigative and research skills. •Participate effectively in personal and group study context using the tools and strategies of formal higher education. •Demonstrate the capacity to take responsibility for own learning in a managed context. •Critically engage with the quality of own and others work. Learners on this programme can transfer to any other level 5 or 6 programme at Dorset College. Successful learners will be able to progress to programmes at level 6 or above at partner colleges or other HETAC Level 6 Science and Health programmes through the FETAC links scheme.
Duration Description
This is a full time FETAC General Studies programme delivered over one academic year. Classes will run for 35 Weeks with 25 hours per week direct learning = 875 Hours. Self-directed learning is 85 Hours per module over the course = 680 Hours, Continuous assessment is carried out throughout the course with final assessment taking place on the last weeks of the course. This programme has 120 credits in total. There will be 875 programme directed hours, 680 programme self-directed hours.
